Providência – Rio de Janeiro /// Like the rest of the slums in Rio de Janeiro, Morro da Providência – the city’s oldest favela – is seeing a huge redevelopment project ahead of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics, deeply affecting the lives of its inhabitants. In September/October 2012, Vhils and his team spent a month there working on a project that spoke out to the people in the light of the expropriation and demolition process. João Pedro Moreira filmed the process, and the video can be seen HERE.
Philadelphia Mural Arts Program /// Dubbed the “largest public art program in the United States”, the Philadelphia Mural Arts Programe invited Vhils to pay the city a visit in July, where he met with emerging artists at YESPhilly for a stencil workshop, and also created a wheatpaste mural on Drury Street based on historic photographs of the city which were cut to reveal “images of a face, a Phillies logo and geometric patterns.”

Festival Imaginarius – Santa Maria da Feira /// Vhils was invited to work on a piece for the Imaginarius street arts festival in Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal (24 - 26 May). As the region is the country’s major industrial centre for cork production, Vhils crafted a large-scale piece from the material, based on the diorama series. The piece was produced in a local factory, and on the opening night was carried by the workers to the Town Hall in a procession – a performative action which aimed to pay tribute to both the workers and the cork industry, one of Portugal’s main exports.
“Sincronias” – MEIAC, Badajoz /// The Museu Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo in Badajoz, Spain, held an exhibition (10 June – 30 Sept) of the António Cachola Collection, usually housed at the MACE – Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Elvas, across the border in Portugal. The collection includes several works by Vhils, with this exhibition showcasing the styrofoam piece “Diorama #1”, first presented at last year’s “Diorama” solo show at the Vera Cortês Art Agency in Lisbon.
“Ex-Situ” Group show at the Centre Pompidou, Paris /// Exploring the “interaction between a work and its environment”, Ex-Situ was an urban art exhibition with exclusive work by RERO, YZ, Ludo, JonOne, OX, Mark Jenkins and Vhils held at the Centre Pompidou in Paris (13 April – 16 June). The event was also an artist residency programme for Studio 13/16, the institution’s new space for teenagers, based on a concept of an in situ work-in-progress developed over “several afternoons in which artists create collective works with adolescents.”
