Providência – Rio de Janeiro /// Like the rest of the slums in Rio de Janeiro, Morro da Providência – the city’s oldest favela – is seeing a huge redevelopment project ahead of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics, deeply affecting the lives of its inhabitants. In September/October 2012, Vhils and his team spent a month there working on a project that spoke out to the people in the light of the expropriation and demolition process. João Pedro Moreira filmed the process, and the video can be seen HERE.

Festival Imaginarius – Santa Maria da Feira /// Vhils was invited to work on a piece for the Imaginarius street arts festival in Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal (24 - 26 May). As the region is the country’s major industrial centre for cork production, Vhils crafted a large-scale piece from the material, based on the diorama series. The piece was produced in a local factory, and on the opening night was carried by the workers to the Town Hall in a procession – a performative action which aimed to pay tribute to both the workers and the cork industry, one of Portugal’s main exports.
“Sincronias” – MEIAC, Badajoz /// The Museu Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo in Badajoz, Spain, held an exhibition (10 June – 30 Sept) of the António Cachola Collection, usually housed at the MACE – Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Elvas, across the border in Portugal.
